"Any idea when you're chatting with Haim?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their fourth member."

However, there remains a key snag: I also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are not alone. A host of famous supporters have openly coveted the role.

One thing is obvious something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a close gang. Their videos often depict them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless joy you can't help but think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'After your show, I bought a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to make music."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the next part of the family."

Historic Milestone

The trio are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the honor isn't lost on the sisters.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the female artists that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The record was born from a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that unique transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The lyrics follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That developed resilience required a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Camaraderie

The band's candor fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone left Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Legacy

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an worldwide fan base.

However the sister act will always be their number one priority.

"We have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "There is no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still going strong."
