The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
