Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.
